Celebrating the International Day for Biodiversity
Nigeriens, Nigeriens;
Tomorrow, May 22, 2022, Niger will join the international community to celebrate the World Day for Biological Diversity, around the central theme: “Building a future common to all forms of life”.
This day is an important landmark for all mankind, as it corresponds to the date of entry into force of the Convention on Biological Diversity in 196 countries, including Niger, which signed and ratified it on 11 June 1992 and 25 July 1995 respectively.
This theme is a continuation of the momentum generated by the United Nations Decade for Ecosystem Restoration, which recalled how biodiversity represents the answer to several sustainable development challenges.
Her choice reminds us of the way in which we all depend for our well-being on living plant, animal and micro-organism species.
Indeed, our health and our livelihood needs depend on biodiversity through the ecosystem goods and services it provides us; namely: water, food, medicine, clothing, fuel, housing and energy, to name a few.
This theme also encourages us to take actions to fight against the loss of biodiversity, climate change, land degradation; and challenges us to the need to work together, in solidarity to build a sustainable common future, in which we will live in perfect harmony with nature.
